The Best Foods for Balancing your Dosha

Our basic body and mind type (VATA, PITTA or KAPHA) will helps us create the best diet for us to follow in order to keep ourselves balanced. An ideal food for a PITTA type may be detrimental to a VATA type. Hence it is essential to match our diet to our constitution.

VATA Dosha.

VATA individuals are dynamic, fast moving yet erratic at times. Prone to digestive and gas, these individuals should favour warm and light foods. The best foods to VATA dosha’s include warm milk with saffron, porridge, soups, fresh baked bread in moderation, nut butters and nuts. Bananas, avocados and berries are excellent fruits for VATA types as they are easy to digest. These types should avoid red meat and favour chicken, fish, chickpeas and tofu as protein sources. Finally cooked carrots, asparagus, potatoes and green leafy vegetable are great additions to any VATA meal. Raw vegetables should be avoided.

A slice of whole grain or gluten-free bread with almond butter and bananas is an excellent breakfast or go to snack idea for all our energetic VATA’s ! 👯‍♀️

PITTA Dosha.

The fiery, passionate PITTA dosha type is filled with heat yet has a sharpness and lightness to them. PITTA individuals match their passion for life with a passion for food and often have a strong appetite. Thanks to a good digestion system, these types can eat about anything but need to favour cooling foods to keep themselves nourished and emotionally balanced. Some excellent foods for PITTA dosha’s includes raw salads (filled with green peppers ,broccoli, cucumber, cabbage…) refreshing drinks (hello ice tea 😉) and raw foods especially during those hot summery months.
Sweet fruits, apples, mangoes, pineapples and pomegranate are great fruit choices for PITTA’s. Oats, rice and wheat are notable carbohydrate sources to keep PITTA’s fiery energy up. For protein, these types should favour tofu, red lentils, shrimp and turkey.
A fresh summer salad including green beans, tomatoes, cucumber, tofu or shrimp topped with sunflower seeds and roasted potatoes on the side can be an excellent lunch idea for all PITTA types !

KAPHA Dosha.

KAPHA dosha’s are naturally sweet, calm, stable, strong and well built. Contrary to Pitta and Vata types, KAPHA types like to take in easy and “go with the flow”. KAPHA individuals can gain weight easily and therefore should avoid high calorie foods like rich desserts and having too many snacks. KAPHA’s should focus on light, dry and warm foods. Great meal ideas for these types include soups and rice with spices such as cumin, sesame and ginger. When it comes to fruits, apples, apricots, dry figs, peaches and pears are great to satisfy to sweet KAPHA cravings !
Chicken and boiled eggs are excellent protein sources for these types too. Pairing meals with lightly tossed carrots, cauliflower, eggplant or mushrooms help to nourish KAPHA types.
KAPHA’s types enjoy their food the most and do tend to overeat. To satisfy cravings and avoid restrictive diets, Apple pie as a dessert after dinner is excellent for KAPHA’s ! 😉 Use coconut or unrefined cane sugar instead of regular sugar and you will not even feel the difference !
Just remember that we are all a combination of the three doshas in varying degrees. By identifying your primary then secondary dosha you will be able keep your digestion on point and help your mind keep you balanced and productive to achieve all your goals !
